Adult Community Learning
Summer Term 2013: Starts Monday, 15th April
Courses running this term include:
Monday: 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm: First Steps in IT. This is a very gently paced course lasting just four weeks and really is for complete computer novices. It teaches how to turn the computer on (and off) properly, get to know the keyboard, not just the middle part where most of the characters are but all those other little known keys to the right and top of the board, how to use and control that pesky little mouse and introducing you to inputting some simple text onto the computer, saving, printing and retrieving. Above all, this course will build up confidence to enable you to sign up for a longer 10 week course and really learn more about using your computer.
Tuesday: 9.30 am - 2.00 pm: Return To Learn. This is one of our long running courses which has and still is proving very popular. It helps bring up your Maths and English skills to GCS level and is ideal for those people who were not possibly happiest with learning whilst at school but now find the need to brush up on these essential skills.
Tuesday, 10.00 a.m. - 12.00 noon: Computers for the Confused: This is a Level 1 course covering Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Internet and Desktop Publishing.
Tuesday, 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm: iPads and Other Tablet Computers: With technology moving and changing at such a fast pace, the purchase and use of tablet computers is fast nearing that of laptops. Learn how to set up your iPad (or other tablet), download additional apps and generally learn how to use it.
Wednesday, 9.30 am - 4.30 pm: ECDL Extra (Level 2) This is an intensive 15 consecutive week course specially formulated to improve productivity in the workplace. This is completely free to anyone working 16 hours or more a week, whether self-employed or working for an SME. Your only commitment is your dedication to learning and time invested. You will learn loads of shortcuts and easier ways of performing the tasks you need in your work. Covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the Internet.
Wednesday, 9.30 am - 11.30 am: Databases Made Easy. A 10 week introduction to databases using Access, where you will learn how to create and manage a relational database and learn how you filter and exract information and create reports much more flexibly than by using Excel.
Wednesday, 10.00 am - 3.00 pm: Family History Level 2: This is a DACE course, delivered by John Ashley and is open to anyone whether they attended the previous Level 1 or not. This is a fascinating course and you will learn how to research your ancestors, get to know who your family was and thus bring your past into your present lives.
Wednesday, 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm: Internet & EMail: This is always a popular unit and is the third we will have run this year. Covers setting up an email address, how to send and receive emails with or without attachments, how to receive and save attachments onto your computer, and how to use file management to keep safely those emails you wish to keep. Also covers surfing the internet safely, what precautions you need to take, anti-virus, anti-spam and antispyware programmes etc.
Thursday, 10.00 am - 12.00 noon: This is a mixed computer class where we are running both Levels 1 and 2 in Word Processing (Word) Spreadsheets & Graphs (Excel), Desktop Publishing (Publisher) and also Access databases. This is not for complete beginners, nor for anyone wishing to follow an Internet & Email unit, but though students are working through different courses, all are getting 1:1 individual attention by an experienced tutor.
Thursday, 5.30 pm - 8.00 pm: Jewellery Making - All Levels: Another one of our very popular courses where students are progressing through the various levels. Learn all the intricacies of making your own jewellery from simple beading to the more complicated items. Also covers tips and signposting to selling and making profit from what you make.
Thursday, 6.00 pm - 7.30 pm: SmartSlim: This is not a course, but a slimming club which has been running at Tairgwaith only since February but is going from strength to strength in increasing numbers and decreasing weights.
With technology moving at a fast pace and with Microsoft's Windows8 and Office 2013 now the main software being installed on computers, if you are interested in attending a one day workshop on either The Transition to Windows 8 Office 2013: First Impressions, please contact us on 01269 826893 to put your name down. These sessions need 8 person to be able to run and we will be able to arrange a date when we have that number of people listed.
We also hope to run a one day taster session entitled Access -v- Excel to demonstrate which is the more suitable programme for creating databases.
Note: We are in the process of finalising our curriculum for the next academic year starting September, but two new DACE courses that we hope to run will be Astronomy and Introduction to Psychology.

New Academic Year
September 2012 - July 2013
==========================================================
We have a wide variety of IT courses at all levels, from complete novice up to advanced levels and this year as well as the OCN individual units we are including the ITQs from OCR which have taken over with the demise of the CLAiT suite of courses as well as being able to offer a wide range of LearnDirect courses where you can either drop in and use our computers or work from home at any time and at your own pace. And, even if you have attended former IT Classes, with a new IT tutor on board this year your learning could take a completely new slant.
The courses for those totally new to the computing world - such as Computing for the Clueless are designed primarily to give confidence to the learners and then gently show them the basics from actually turning on the computer, getting to know the keyboard and mouse, and then creating, saving and printing documents, thus changing you to being one of the clued up!
Whatever level of course a learner may wish to follow, our principle goal is that by attending any of our courses we will be helping to get you back into the workplace or, if you are in employment, by building on existing skills your future career prospects will be greatly enhanced. For those in retirement, learning new skills can enhance your lives both socially and academically.
Perhaps you are one of the many people who never enjoyed their schooldays and now realise what you missed out on during those precious years. In our Adult Education Programme, our marvellous Return to Learn sessions can greatly help with numeracy or literacy where playing around with figures and words become quite fun.
For those people who are employed for 16 hours or more a week, we are runnin ECDL Extra (Level 2). This is designed specifically for people in the workplace and is aimed at improving IT Productivity. This is a 15-week intensive course coveing IT Basics/Fundamentals, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet & Email running on a Wednesday from 9.30 - 4.30. Our next course commences Wednesday, 24th April 2013. This is a completely FREE course and as such the uptake is expected to be very high. IT IS NEVER TOO EARLY (or too late) TO GET YOUR NAME DOWN and, if April is not convenient, we will be repeating the course in June and in September.
As well as our vocational courses, we also deliver a wide range of recreational courses. Subjects such as Jewellery Making , Welsh History and Family History make this type of course highly popular and we are always striving to add to the list. Why not contact us for copy of the 2012-2013 prospectus - if you did not receive one through your letter box.
Running regularly throughout the year when we have sufficient numbers are one day workshops in First Aid and Food Hygiene.
One-Day Workshops in Introduction to Computing, Digital Photography, Webpage Creation Made Easy, Desktop Publishing, Introduction to the Internet, OnLine Shopping and Transition to Microsoft Office 2010 are also run periodically when we have sufficient numbers.
Additionally, if you are looking for work or are employed but looking to change jobs or promotion prospects, we will help with CV Writing, Interview and Telephone Techniques: and have a room set up specifically to give you open access to computers to go online and search for jobs. In fact, if you sign up for LearnDirect, you will be able to access - completely free of charge - some wonderful interactive 'Fit For Work' courses.
If you have ever thought of becoming self employed, joining our Enterprise Club could be just the ticket.
For further information or to put your name down on any of these courses, please contact us on 01269 826893 or email to register you interest to admin@canolfanmaerdy.co.uk.
